What To Expect in Your First Therapy Session
By: Lauren Hamrick, LPCA
Starting therapy can feel like a big step. For many people, there’s excitement about finally reaching out for support, but also nerves about what it will actually be like. If you’ve never been to therapy before—or if you’re beginning again after some time away—you might be wondering: What happens in the first session?
The truth is, therapy is meant to feel safe and supportive, not intimidating. Here’s a gentle look at what you can expect when beginning this journey:
1. A Warm Welcome
The first session is all about creating comfort. You don’t have to come in with a polished story or know exactly what to say. I’ll start by welcoming you into the space (whether virtually or in person) and letting you set the pace.
2. Paperwork & Housekeeping
We’ll briefly go over a few practical things—like confidentiality, scheduling, and any questions you have about the therapy process. Think of this as setting the stage for our work together so you feel clear and supported.
3. Sharing Your Story
This is your chance to share what’s been going on and what brought you here. You can share as much or as little as feels comfortable. Many clients talk about the challenges they’re facing—whether it’s anxiety, relationship struggles, postpartum overwhelm, or a big life transition—and what they hope to feel or experience instead.
4. Exploring Your Hopes
We’ll also talk about what you’d like to get out of therapy. Some clients want tools to manage specific symptoms, while others are looking for a space to reflect and heal. Either way, our work will be tailored to your unique needs and goals.
5. Next Steps Together
By the end of the session, we’ll talk about what ongoing therapy could look like—how often we might meet, and what approach might be most supportive for you. You’ll leave with a clearer picture of how therapy can fit into your life, and hopefully, a sense of relief that you’ve taken the first step.
🌱 Final Thoughts
It’s completely normal to feel nervous before your first session. But remember—you don’t need to have everything figured out. Therapy is about showing up as you are and allowing yourself to be supported.
Taking that first step is brave, and it’s the beginning of creating more space for healing, growth, and hope in your life.
